PDI Audit for shippers
Fuel Surcharge Check
Check the fuel surcharge on a freight bill against the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) weekly diesel price for that week. Free, no sign in.
Most carrier fuel tables work the same way: the diesel price that week, minus the table's base price, divided by the truck's miles per gallon, gives a surcharge per mile.
Other charges to compare against your contract
Fuel is one line on a freight bill. When you check a bill, compare these extra charges against what your contract or rate confirmation says.
Detention
Time the truck waited at pickup or delivery past the free time in the contract. Check the free time, the hourly terms and the arrival and departure times.
Layover
A charge when a truck has to wait overnight or longer to load or unload. Check that the delay and the terms match the contract.
Lumper
A fee paid to workers who load or unload the trailer. Check for a receipt and that the contract lets the carrier pass it on.
Truck order not used
A charge when a load is cancelled after the truck was dispatched. Check the cancellation timing and the contract terms.
Extra stops
Charges for pickups or deliveries beyond the first. Check the number of stops on the bill against the shipment and the contract.
